It's not strength or power that win dragon boat races, said

5TH ANNUAL LEWES DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL TO BENEFIT
Sussex Academy and the Lewes Public Library
The Sussex Academy Foundation will host its Fifth Annual Lewes Dragon Boat Festival at the Canalfront Park in downtown Lewes, Delaware on Sunday, September 17th, 2017.
The Lewes Dragon Boat Festival (LDBF) was created to support the capital campaign for Sussex Academy, a public charter, tuition free school that currently serves students in grades 6 through 12 in Sussex County, Delaware. All proceeds from the LDBF go directly to help pay for the campus and buildings of the Sussex Academy.

The Inagural Dragon Boat Festival
In September 2013 the Sussex Academy Foundation hosted the inaugural Lewes Dragon Boat Festival at the Lewes Canalfront Park, Lewes, DE. The First Dragon Boat Festival in the First State was a success and will be held for its third year on Sunday, September 13, 2015.
Originating in the first games of Olympia in Ancient Greece, modern dragon boating became an international sport in Hong Kong in 1976. Today, Dragon Boat Racing is the 8th fastest growing sport in the United States. A Dragon Boat resembles a 46-foot hollowed canoe with a dragon’s head on the front and a tail on the back. Each boat has 10 rows of seats for 20 paddlers to sit side-by-side. A seat in the bow is for a drummer to provide the cadence of the strokes and a professional Steersman controls the boat from the stern with a sweep oar. Today, cities across the United States host annual Dragon Boat Races.
In 2013 the festival hosted 21 teams. The 2013 top three places went to: Striper Bites, Schell Brothers and the Pilots’ Association for the Bay and River, DE.
In 2014 the festival hosted 30 teams. The 2014 top three places went to: Griffin and Hackett, Crossfit Lewes and Echelon Custom Homes.
TEAMS & SPECTATOR TESTIMONIALS
“This past Sunday, in my opinion, quite possibly went down as one of the most amazing days I have ever experienced as a Lewes resident. As we all know it was the inaugural Dragon Boat Festival in the Canalfront Park! If anyone missed it, I sure hope for your sake that this wildly successful day will return again next year.
“ Everyone I spoke with commented on how well run this delightful event was for all. The entire community has benefited….”
