Frequently Asked Questions
A Dragon Boat is a 40 ft boat that looks a lot like a canoe. There are 10 rows of seats where paddlers sit 2 by 2 and paddle on their side of the boat. The goal is to have the boat work as a team and paddle in synch. There is a drummer on the front of the boat who keeps the stroke cadence by banging a drum.
No. The boats arrive 4 days before the event with the professional racing company. The racing company handles all of the race logistics including having a member of their staff in the back of each boat. The racing staff will help motivate, offer coaching and steer the boat keeping everyone safe.
Most of the participants in the LDBF have no prior racing experience with the exception of participation in the prior years’ events. Each team will have the opportunity to practice with a coach from the racing company on September 17th, 18th or 19th. During this time teams will learn the proper paddling techniques, safety measures, get their seat position in the boat and have on the water practice time.
Practice times are awarded based on the order that registration applications are received. When a team registers they have 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice options for practice days/times. We will always do our best to accommodate these requests however the best chance of getting a practice time you want is to sign up early.
The racecourse is between 250-350 meters long. The actual length will be determined on race day when the course is set by the professional racing company. They will determine the length based on shoals, currents and fairness of lanes.
Anyone between the ages of 12 and 112 can paddle as long as you are in reasonable physical condition. If a team is interested in the youth division then all paddlers must be between 12-18 with 2 members of the team 18 or older.
You can sponsor the event or a youth team by clicking the sponsor tab and/or we always need volunteers. Without volunteers on race day we could not pull off a successful event. Consider volunteering by adding your name to the Sign Up Genius that will be posted a few weeks before the event.
